GENERAL PURPOSE
The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology is dedicated to cutting-edge scientific research, in order to work towards a better understanding of how the human body functions and to alleviate human diseases. Our labs involve research in the fields of cell signaling, G-proteins and ion channels, mitochondria and mechanisms of cell death, cardiovascular diseases and vascular biology, neurodegeneration and drugs of abuse, and integrative neurosciences.

We are mitochondrial physiology laboratory with focus on metal neurotoxicity, stress adaptation and Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. We use complementary systems in C. elegans and mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. The overarching goal of the research is to elucidate the mechanisms of mitochondrial iron dysregulation in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. Prior work in our laboratory revealed that iron toxicity: 1) alters mitochondrial function, 2) increased oxidative stress through
increase in reactive oxygen production and 3) both pharmacologic and genetic interventions protect against iron mediated toxicity. The technical assistant will assist in reaching the laboratory goal as outline in the job duties and responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide management C. elegans strains, mouse husbandry, documentation and organization of data. Perform C. elegans behavioral assays, transfer worms, mouse behavior, immunohistochemistry, brain slices, and analyze data.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment; preparation of reagents/media
  • Culture C. elegans, metal toxicity assessment, mouse behavioral assay, isolate mitochondria and measure mitochondrial function/biogenetics.
  • Execute experiments both fairly independently and in collaboration with scientists in the group. Perform routine molecular biology, toxicology and biochemistry analysis such as PCR, cloning, western blot, ELISA and elemental analysis.
  • Review, analyze and integrate technical work of others. Preform literature searches and contribute to research projects and manuscripts.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
