$19.96 - $27.94The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE:A neuroscience laboratory at the University of Rochester has an opening for a full-time research technician, to work on a project involving the neural control of steering. This position involves performing a variety of research-related activities that require an educational background in biomedical engineering and/or neuroscience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Measuring behavioral performance of subjects in a virtual-reality steering task; exploring parameter ranges to find optimal settings for quantifying performance; managing behavioral data that are collected <25%>
- Developing and performing quantitative analyses of behavioral data, including signal processing, frequency-domain analysis, and fitting data with dynamic models based on control theory <10%>
- Conducting neurophysiological recordings using microelectrode arrays, operating experimental control and data acquisition systems, processing and management of neurophysiological data. <15%>
- Developing and performing analyses of neural data, primarily using software written in Matlab. This includes constructing and testing neural encoding models, performing time-series and spectral analyses of neural signals, and building neural decoding models. <15%>
- Performing literature searches and reading journal articles related to the project background, as well as new experimental or analytical techniques. This includes giving presentations at lab meetings regarding new findings in journal articles, as well as attending relevant seminars to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field. <5%>
- Fabrication and preparation of experimental tools and supplies, assisting with surgical procedures, maintaining and repairing laboratory equipment, and maintaining compliance with all laboratory regulations. <10%>
- Assisting with general lab management. This includes helping with general care and maintenance of laboratory animals, documentation and record-keeping, as well as teaching laboratory techniques and experimental procedures to new students or staff in the lab. <20%>
QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelors (or Masters) degree in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or a closely related field is preferred, as well as some research experience.
- Background in control systems engineering, quantitative physiology, and Matlab computer programming is strongly desired.
- The successful candidate should be able to work well independently, with guidance from their supervisor and colleagues.
