THIS IS A PART-TIME GRANT-FUNDED POSITION (24 HOURS PER WEEK)

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician 2 assists with laboratory experiments using mice and rats and biochemical, molecular and cell culture studies. This position collects and enters research data, analyzes the data, assists with ordering supplies, maintains inventories, and assists with the projects of the graduate and medical students.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs laboratory experiments with cell culture and with mice and rats.
  2. Breed, genotype, maintain records and conduct visual experiments (ERG, OKT etc.) with live mice and rats.
  3. Harvests tissue, maintains inventory and up-to-date records of mice-rats status/experimental data within the in-house database.
  4. Collects tissue (mostly eyes) and processes for histological analyses by paraffin block and sectioning, staining etc.
  5. Performs molecular, biochemical, and cell culture experiments.
  6. Performs tissue culture using sterile technique and maintains cell lines.
  7. Extracts RNA, protein, and lipids from cells and performs cDNA synthesis, and gene expression studies using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy etc.
  8. Assists the PI in implementing study protocols, data collection, and analysis; maintains laboratory records and compliance issues.
  9. Assists the PI in other research-related items.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: OR a combination of college coursework and work experience to equal four (4) years.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Skill in conducting investigations by biochemical, molecular, and cellular experiments.
  • Skill properly handling laboratory mice and rats,
  • Excellent organizational skills, work ethics, and clinical judgment.
  • Computer skills (experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Prism, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and accurately document completed work.
  • Ability to work independently and to help instruct students.
