The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) is seeking a Technical Specialist I to support research engineering and operations activities. This position plays a critical role in the design, fabrication, maintenance, and operation of specialized research equipment and facilities. The ideal candidate will bring strong mechanical and electrical technical skills and a passion for supporting innovative research and student learning.

This is a hands-on technical position that supports faculty, staff, and students in executing research projects across a variety of advanced systems and facilities.

The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) is seeking a Technical Specialist I to support research engineering and operations activities. This position plays a critical role in the design, fabrication, maintenance, and operation of specialized research equipment and facilities. The ideal candidate will bring strong mechanical and electrical technical skills and a passion for supporting innovative research and student learning.

Required Qualifications:

  • Vocational or technical training, completion of a certified apprenticeship, or 5 years of experience in a technical field.
  • Knowledge and experience with:
    • Light fabrication and construction of research apparatus
    • Shop tools and equipment (saws, drill press, hand tools, etc.)
    • AC and DC electrical circuits, wiring, and troubleshooting
    • Sensors, instrumentation, and basic control systems
    • Valves, piping systems, air compressors, and air dryers
    • High-pressure air systems and compressed gases
  • Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings and technical manuals
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with:
    • Complex research test facilities and laboratory systems
    • Cryogenic fluids and vacuum systems
    • Data acquisition systems and LabVIEW
    • Wind tunnels, propulsion systems, optics, and lasers
    • Flammable gases and oxygen service environments
    • Basic mill and lathe work
    • 3D printing (FFF and SLA)
    • CNC router operation
    • Forklift operation

  • First shift position with occasional evenings, weekends, or travel as needed
  • Hands-on work in laboratory and research environments
  • Involves use of machinery, tools, and specialized equipment
  • Requires adherence to safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment

Technical Support & Fabrication (50%)

  • Provide mechanical and electrical technical support for research facilities and equipment.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and set up experimental systems and research hardware.
  • Assist with the design of research components that do not require engineering-level design.
  • Operate specialized research equipment in support of projects and testing activities.

Maintenance & Equipment Operations (30%)

  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of research equipment and facilities.
  • Conduct modifications, part replacements, adjustments, and calibration.
  • Recommend improvements or modifications to enhance equipment performance and reliability.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs and documentation.

Technical Consultation & Training (20%)

  • Serve as a technical resource for faculty, staff, and students on research projects.
  • Provide guidance on fabrication techniques, equipment use, and safe work practices.
  • Assist in training users on laboratory equipment and systems.
  • Support research teams by offering practical solutions during project development.
