Lab & Research Tech 2 OR Lab Specialist, GEMM Core

The Genetically Engineered Murine Model (GEMM) core facility at the UVA School of Medicine seeks candidates for a Lab & Research Tech 2 OR Lab Specialist to provide scientific and technical support for animal model production and preservation. The GEMM Core is one of the shared resource facilities overseen by the Office of Research Core Administration (ORCA). The GEMM Core has been steadily serving the UVA research community for more than 30 years. We are recruiting a candidate to engage in service activities of creating and preserving mouse models for investigators at UVA or their collaborators elsewhere. We are seeking an individual with enthusiasm to adapt to a fulfilling career in a stable academic service environment. We are willing to train the dedicated candidate to master the skills to assume responsibilities as a team player or with minimal supervision.
Job Responsibilities
• Understand laboratory process and procedures
• Conduct laboratory procedures with limited supervision
• Work by following lab protocols diligently and with attention to detail
• Organize lab records and order supplies
• Communicate with supervisor, users and vivarium staff effectively
• Assist the core management in the administration and coordination of activities
• Perform animal husbandry to manage mouse colonies
• Carry out mouse surgeries
• Harvest and culture mouse embryos
• Manipulate embryos either by electroporation or microinjection
• Cryopreserve and rederive mouse lines
• Maintain GEMM’s cryobank
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lab Tech 2
Education: Associate's degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience, education, certification in lieu of degree.
Experience: 2+ years of lab experience which may include student experience.
Licensure: None.
Lab Specialist
Education: Bachelor's degree required, may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.
Experience: 1+ year of relevant lab experience required.
Licensure: None.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with mammalian cell culture or other non-animal model systems is a plus.
- Experience working with mice.
- Basic colony management (setting up breeding pairs, weaning, record keeping)
- Basic mouse handling and procedures (scruffing, intraperitoneal injections)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. This is a non-exempt-level, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits.
This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.
This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
