The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center was established to expand basic, translational, and clinical research of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, including congestive heart failure, hypertension, atherosclerosis, stroke, aneurysms, and vascular auto-immune diseases are the most common cause of death and disability in the United States, and account for approximately 30% of deaths and health care costs annually in this country and developed societies.

The mission of the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center is to support interdisciplinary research in basic, translational and clinical cardiovascular sciences, including cardiovascular development, function, pathophysiology, pharmacology, genetics, genomics, and proteomics, and to apply this knowledge to better understand the causes of cardiovascular diseases and to pioneer development of new innovative therapies and approaches to prevent or treat them

Position Summary

The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) is currently seeking a Laboratory and Research Specialist to assist and lead in the centers immunohistochemical core.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to assist our core CVRC Histology Core. The CVRC is a highly vibrant and active community of 11 resident faculty labs and over 100 member labs. The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial personality with a strong work ethic and desire to help others be successful.

Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to, embedding, fixation, sectioning, adipocyte cell measuring, histochemical and immunostaining, immunofluorescence, etc.

The successful candidate must be able to work a demanding but flexible schedule and also work with and train students, post-docs, and other members of our labs to assist in conducting all aspects of experiments involving immunohistochemical areas. The position requires coordinating research projects and logistics with other lab members; compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures; consulting with the Principle Investigator regularly; and oversight of laboratory purchasing, equipment, and supplies required for operation of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required.

  • Experience: 3+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The individual should have several years of directly related immunohistochemical experience to be considered and must be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand and have strong communication skills.

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Salary Range

  • Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

  • This is a restricted position, which is dependent on funding and is contingent upon funding availability.

  • This position has an end date of April 20, 2027, after which continued employment will depend on department need and funding.

  • This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
