POSITION PURPOSE
Immunology has an opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1. Research in the Oberst lab within the UW School of Medicine’s Dept. of Immunology focuses on programmed cell death and its role in immunity. Ongoing projects in the Oberst lab include work on infection, cancer immunotherapy, and autoimmunity. The goal of this research program is to discover novel biological phenomena and describe them in high-impact publications. More information is available at https://www.oberstlab.org/

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The person holding this RSE1 position is expected to perform a variety of tasks, including lab responsibilities and participation in scientific projects. (70%)
  • Perform lab managerial duties, including organization and ordering of research materials.
  • Maintenance of mouse colony - maintain a breeding colony of mice under specific-pathogen-free conditions, including weaning, ear tagging, genotyping, and updating the mouse census
  • Lab upkeep and maintenance
  • Timely filing of paperwork
  • Establish data storage and electronic communications strategies
  • Learn about and maintain laboratory compliance with key regulatory bodies, including UW IACUC, Environmental Health and Safety, and laboratory controlled substances licensing.
  • Work with Dr. Oberst and administrators to ensure effective budgeting of laboratory grant funds.

    The RSE1 is also expected to conduct experiments in the field of immunology and/or in microscopy technique development under the general direction of the Principal Investigator. (30%)
  • Make measurements and record observations and data for use in reports and publications.
  • Conduct research as an independent project or as part of collaborative projects with other team members.
  • Participate in regular laboratory meetings and events and contribute materials and information to these events.
  • Specific experimental techniques to be performed will include: basic molecular biology techniques, including DNA preparation and PCR; cell culture; performing experimental procedures on mice, including cell/tissue/blood isolation; flow cytometry; microscopy; organize and analyze research data; prepare laboratory reagents; restock laboratory supplies; participate in laboratory meetings
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    Bachelor's degree in a Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology or related field and one year of relevant experience working with laboratory mice,

    OR

    Equivalent combination of education/experience.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The incumbent is expected to know fundamental concepts, practices and procedures particular to the research in the lab, as well as use that knowledge and exercise judgement to solve well-defined problems using accepted methods.
  • Excellent organizational, quantitative, computational and record keeping skills, attention to detail, ability to work within a team environment,
  • willingness to work with laboratory mice, and ability to work independently.
    The ability and willingness to learn and apply new skills, including technically complex tasks, is essential.
  • Effective record keeping, communication, and teamwork are also required.
  • Previous experience working with laboratory mice, including analyzing and maintaining genetically modified animal lines;
  • Basic Molecular Biology Skills such as PCR; cell culture.
