The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing and distributing medications for patient consumption under the general supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with standard departmental procedures.

The Pharmacy Technician supports the Pharmacy Department by preparing and distributing medications under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist.

Essential Duties:

  • Works under direct supervision of the pharmacist at all times. Responsible duties include drug distribution and intravenous admixture throughout the hospital.
  • 1) Performs all aspects of the Omnicell® automated dispensing machines. a) Refills Omnicell® cabinets with accuracy. b) Have a pharmacist verify all medications prior to delivering to the floors.
  • 2) Maintains cleanliness and orderliness in work area, pharmacy, and medication rooms.
  • 3) Documents the following log sheets regularly and timely: a) Refrigerator temperature logs in pharmacy b) Refrigerator temperature logs in nursing units c) IV Hood and chemo hood cleaning logs d) Monthly outdates inspection log e) Chemotherapy preparation log
  • 4) Performs encoding of physician orders: a) Demonstrates ability to enter orders with completeness and accuracy. b) Notifies pharmacist of any orders that require further interpretation or follow-up.
  • 5) Preparation and dispensing of medications is appropriate. a) All medications to be delivered to a patient have been verified by a pharmacist. b) Recognizes the urgency of tasks and fulfills assignments/deliveries timely.
  • 6) Competency in repackaging medications. a) Labeling is complete and accurate.
  • 7) Competency in IV admixtures. a) Demonstrate efficiency and accuracy. b) Demonstrate and utilize concepts of aseptic technique when performing IV admixtures.
  • 8) Competency in Chemotherapy admixtures.
  • 9) Maintains record keeping log of controlled substances. a) Obtains signature from recipients on both Controlled Substances Administration Records and Controlled Drug Receipt form upon delivery to nursing units. b) Maintains accurate record in narcotic perpetual inventory for all transactions. c) Replenish medication trays (OR boxes, Radiology box, Endoscopy box) completely and accurately.
  • 10) Competency in the Cerner Millenium PharmNet system. a) Demonstrate ability to view profile and print labels. b) Demonstrate ability to accurately charge/credit medications.
  • 11) Performs floor stock responsibilities with accuracy and completeness.
  • 12) Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req High school or equivalent
  • Graduation from accredited Pharmacy Technician School or 5 years experience in hospital pharmacy setting
  • Req 6 months 6 months experience in Hospital In-Patient Facility.
  • Req Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Req Must demonstrate excellent customer service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Specialized/technical training Graduation from accredited Pharmacy Technician School.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Pharmacy Technician (CA DCA) Registration with California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
The hourly rate range for this position is $29.00 – $45.20.
