The Internship
Held over an 11-week period during the summer of 2025 for undergrad students graduating between December 2025 and August 2026. The paid internship will prepare associates for a career with Walmart Economics team. Work on a meaningful project, network with industry experts, and develop your skills while having an epic summer!
About the Economist Internship
As the Fortune One company, Walmart sells hundreds of billions of dollars a year in merchandise and employs more than one million people. Walmart’s scale and the complexity of its problems necessitate careful, sophisticated analysis. The Walmart Economics team is responsible for applying the latest insights and methods from academia to drive Walmart’s decision making and continued transformation.
The Walmart Economics team is growing quickly. Economists on the team work with the Chief Economist on projects across the company, including:
Optimizing pricing
Growing membership and subscriptions
Increasing our sustainability
Developing a thriving marketplace
Interns are fully immersed in the team and can expect to take on a short-term version or a component of a full-time project. You will partner with business and tech teams in our Home Office to use tools from Economics to understand the causal impact of decisions, identify and optimize tradeoffs, and drive strategy using first principles. Interns work on projects with real-world impact while gaining experience working at one of the largest companies in the world.
Responsibilities:
Designing and analyzing experiments – Guide decision making by ensuring we understand the impact of potential changes through careful experimentation
Performing causal inference – Leverage the latest in econometrics and statistics to understand the effect of changes we cannot run experimentally
Framing and evaluating trade-offs – Define and weigh business trade-offs to drive strategic decisions under uncertainty
Applying behavioral economics – Use an understanding of behavioral economics to inform user experience design
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be actively enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program.
Expected graduation date between December 2025-August 2026.
Experience with analyzing large datasets (ideally coding in SQL, R, or Python) is a plus
Passion for economics or experience assisting with academic research
You’re curious and a self-starter, naturally interested in learning more
You’re collaborative and uplift your team when you partner with others
You enjoy hard problems
You have knowledge of experimentation and causal inference methods
Willingness to relocate to Walmart’s Home Office Hub (Bentonville, AR) after graduation.

Live Better U is a Walmart-paid education benefit program for full-time and part-time associates in Walmart and Sam's Club facilities. The hourly wage range for this position is $19.00-$35.00*
*The actual hourly rate will equal or exceed the required minimum wage applicable to the job location.
Additional compensation in the form of premiums may be paid in amounts ranging from $0.35 per hour to $3.00 per hour in specific circumstances. Premiums may be based on schedule, facility, season, or specific work performed. Multiple premiums may apply if applicable criteria are met.
