SOFTWARE ENGINEER III
Walmart
Position Summary...
What you'll do...
Job Description Summary:
We are seeking a talented Software Engineer 3 to join our team at Walmart Global Tech. In this role, you will work across the full technology stack — splitting your time equally between front-end UI development (50%) and back-end services (50%) — to build scalable, high-performance applications that serve millions of customers and associates daily.
You will be part of a fast-paced, agile team that designs, develops, and deploys production-grade systems powering Walmart's digital commerce ecosystem.
About Team:
Our team collaborates with Walmart International, which has over 5,900 retail units operating outside of the United States under 55 banners in 26 countries including Africa, Argentina, Canada, Central America, Chile, China, India, Japan, and Mexico, to name a few.
What you'll do:
Front-End (50%)
- Design and develop responsive, accessible, and performant user interfaces using React, TypeScript, and modern front-end tooling
- Build and maintain Micro Front-End (MFE) architectures, enabling independent deployment and team autonomy across shared platforms
- Implement reusable component libraries and design system patterns for consistency across applications
- Optimize front-end performance (lazy loading, code splitting, SSR/CSR strategies)
- Write comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests for UI components
- Collaborate with UX/Design teams to translate wireframes and prototypes into pixel-perfect, accessible interfaces
Back-End (50%)
- Design, develop, and maintain Java-based microservices following RESTful API best practices and clean architecture principles
- Build event-driven systems using Apache Kafka for real-time data streaming, messaging, and asynchronous processing
- Design and optimize data models using NoSQL databases (e.g., Cassandra, Cosmos DB, MongoDB) for high-throughput, low-latency use cases
- Implement resilient, fault-tolerant services with proper circuit breaking, retries, and observability
- Participate in system design and architecture discussions, contributing to technical decision-making
- Ensure services meet SLAs for performance, availability, and scalability at Walmart scale
Cross-Cutting
- Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and maintaining high code quality standards
- Contribute to CI/CD pipeline improvements using Walmart's internal platforms (Concord, iNfiniti, WCNP)
- Monitor production systems using Grafana, Splunk, and alerting tools; participate in on-call rotations
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team knowledge sharing
- Write clear technical documentation for APIs, architecture decisions, and runbooks.
What you'll bring:
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience in full-stack development
- Front-End: Strong proficiency in React (hooks, context, state management), TypeScript, and Micro Front-End (MFE) patterns (Module Federation, single-spa, or equivalent)
- Back-End: Strong proficiency in Java (Java 11+, Spring Boot, Spring MVC)
- Apache Kafka: Hands-on experience with producers, consumers, topic management, and stream processing
- NoSQL Databases: Experience with Cassandra, Cosmos DB, MongoDB, or DynamoDB — schema design, indexing, and query optimization
- Microservices Architecture: Solid understanding of service decomposition, API gateway patterns, inter-service communication (sync & async)
- Containerization: Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Tools: Proficiency with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development methodologies
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
Preferred
- Experience with server-side rendering (Next.js) or static site generation.
- Familiarity with Walmart internal platforms: WCNP, Concord, CCM, Kafka on Azure/Confluent
- Experience with observability tools: Grafana, Splunk, Prometheus
- Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, GCP)
- Experience with GraphQL or BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) patterns
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and internationalization (i18n).
- Contributions to open-source projects or internal shared libraries
