About the team - Sam’s Membership Growth Strategy team accelerates acquisition, engagement, and retention for Sam’s Club Members. We operate at the intersection of product, marketing, and strategy — using advanced analytics, experimentation, and data science to unlock member-centric growth across the business.
What You’ll Do
As a Staff Data Scientist, you will partner deeply across Membership, Product, Marketing, and Operations to surface insights, build predictive frameworks, and influence decisions that shape the future of Membership at Sam’s Club.
1. Deliver Impactful Analytical Insights
- Lead complex, ambiguous analyses across behavioral, transactional, and digital datasets to uncover step-change growth opportunities
- Define key business questions and analytical approaches for acquisition, engagement, retention, and monetization
- Identify systemic friction points across the membership lifecycle and drive cross-functional alignment on solutions
- Establish best practices and reusable analytical frameworks for the team
2. Build Advanced Analytical & Predictive Models
- Architect and guide development of advanced models (e.g., acquisition propensity, churn risk, CLV, benefit adoption) at scale
- Design robust customer segmentation and personalization frameworks that influence product and marketing strategy
- Ensure models are production-ready by collaborating with engineering on scalability, monitoring, and integration
- Set modeling standards, review approaches, and mentor team members on advanced techniques
3. Experimentation & Causal Measurement
- Define experimentation strategy and measurement frameworks across product and marketing initiatives
- Lead design and interpretation of complex experiments, including multi-variate testing and quasi-experimental methods
- Apply advanced causal inference techniques (e.g., diff-in-diff, uplift modeling, MMM) to drive decision-making at scale
- Standardize experimentation practices and elevate statistical rigor across the organization
4. Influence Membership & Business Strategy
- Translate complex analyses into clear, actionable narratives for senior and executive stakeholders
- Shape Membership strategy through forecasting, opportunity sizing, and scenario modeling
- Proactively identify new growth levers and influence roadmap prioritization
- Act as a strategic advisor to cross-functional leaders, driving alignment on high-impact initiatives
5. Collaborate Across the Sam’s & Walmart Ecosystem
- Lead cross-functional initiatives spanning Membership, Product, Marketing, Finance, Operations, and Walmart’s broader Data & Analytics org
- Partner with Staff and Principal Data Scientists to define long-term analytics vision and technical roadmap
- Mentor and develop junior and senior data scientists, raising the overall capability of the team
- Drive adoption of best practices in data science, experimentation, and decision-making across the organization
What You’ll bring
Technical Skills
- 8-12 years of experience in data science, analytics, or related fields
- Deep expertise in SQL and Python (pandas, scikit-learn, statsmodels) and experience working with large-scale datasets
- Proven track record of building and scaling predictive models in production environments
- Advanced understanding of experimentation, causal inference, and statistical modeling
- Experience with cloud data ecosystems (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake, Spark) and production-grade data workflows
Business & Strategic Skills
- Strong ability to define and structure ambiguous, high-impact business problems into scalable analytical solutions
- Deep experience in growth, marketing, product analytics, or membership/subscription models
- Exceptional stakeholder management and executive communication skills
- Proven ability to influence strategy and drive alignment across senior cross-functional partners without formal authority
- Track record of leading initiatives end-to-end and mentoring others in high-performing teams
