What you'll do...

About Team:
Search team at Walmart powers the core search experience that connects millions of customers with the right products instantly and reliably. Our mission is to deliver highly performant, fault-tolerant, and intelligent query execution systems that make the act of search seamless for every customer.

We own the runtime layer of the search stack - the backbone responsible for query parsing, retrieval, ranking, and response aggregation. This layer forms the bridge between large-scale data systems, real-time feature computation, and ML-based ranking algorithms. Our systems operate across billions of queries daily, blending precision, recall, and performance to deliver relevant results efficiently.

The Runtime team consists of backend engineers with the goal to make every millisecond count in product discovery. We design and evolve low-latency, high-throughput systems leveraging Java, Solr, Cassandra, and Kubernetes-based distributed infrastructure, continuously pushing the boundaries of scale, resilience, and observability.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, build, and optimize core Search Runtime services responsible for query interpretation, execution, and response merging across distributed clusters.

  • Improve performance and reliability of search requests through innovations in caching, parallelization and thread optimization.

  • Collaborate closely with ranking, indexing, and platform teams to deliver end-to-end scalable runtime architecture that ensures low latency and high relevance.

  • Enhance query execution frameworks to support new domains, marketplaces, and search modalities

  • Drive monitoring, alerting, and observability improvements for runtime systems to ensure best-in-class error detection and recovery.

  • Participate in large-scale system design reviews, performance profiling initiatives, and rollout of next-gen runtime capabilities like hybrid retrieval and vector search.

  • Prototype and deploy improvements to search orchestration pipelines, ensuring efficient feature fan-out and concurrent model execution.

What you’ll bring:

  • Strong expertise in Java-based distributed system design with a focus on performance, scalability, and fault tolerance.

  • Solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, multithreaded programming, and low-latency system design patterns.

  • Deep understanding of API design, service orchestration, caching techniques, and performance tuning in microservice ecosystems.

  • Strong analytical and debugging skills for diagnosing issues in large distributed production systems.

  • Passion for engineering excellence, automation, and building resilient systems that operate at web scale.

  • Effective communicator who collaborates well across teams — balancing technical depth with practical execution.
