Position Summary...
Join Walmart’s Consumer Health & Data Solutions team to build data science products that help customers eat healthier and make more informed wellness choices. As a Staff Data Scientist, you’ll develop recommendation systems, behavioral “signals” models, and health-focused chatbot capabilities—taking work from data sourcing and experimentation through evaluation and production partnership. - Build and improve ML systems for recommendations, behavioral signals, and nutrition-focused chatbot experiences.
- Lead the design and implementation of predictive models, recommender systems, customer segmentation and other advanced analytics projects.
- Develop and execute data-driven solutions for various initiatives, such as personalized product and content recommendations, health coaching, customer segmentation in the consumer health space, and product assortment in retail space.
- Experience creating, finetuning and validating boosted tree-based models, for balanced as well as imbalanced problems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate data insights into product development, educational and outreach campaigns, and operational processes.
- Identify fit-for-purpose data sources, run initial data quality checks, and translate product questions into modeling approaches.
- Evaluate and tune models using appropriate metrics (e.g., ROC, RMSE) and robust validation practices.
- Partner with data engineering to deploy, scale, and monitor models in production.
- Communicate results through clear visualizations and stakeholder-ready narratives.
- Ph.D. or master’s degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, data science, or a related field.
- Strong applied ML background, including deep learning and embeddings; GenAI experience is a plus.
- Experience with recommendation and/or search-style problems beyond collaborative filtering-only approaches.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL with large-scale data (e.g., BigQuery).
- Demonstrated skill in model testing/tuning/validation and production-minded measurement.
- Experience with bias analysis, fairness metrics, and model explainability techniques.
- Experience with time-series or other temporal modeling.
- Experience building personalization systems for recommendations and/or search.
- Experience with generative AI methods and/or recommendation + generative approaches.
- Experience with big data and orchestration tools (e.g., Spark, Airflow, BigQuery).
- Familiarity with health and wellness products, services, or research environments.
- Experience in retail, eCommerce, and/or omnichannel domains.
- Knowledge of privacy and compliance considerations for health-related data (e.g., HIPAA concepts).
- Experience working in an Agile environment.
- Incubation: includes Walmart Everyday Health Signals (EHS), a health insights product, and Walmart's Nutrition Hub, which supports personalized healthy eating powered by EHS
- Digital Business Services: includes customer identity, digital engagement, and business analytics to support health and wellness lines of business

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
