About Team
Walmart’s AI & Data organization is building platform capabilities and enterprise services that accelerate the journey from idea to AI-powered solution safely and cost-effectively for builders across the enterprise. This includes foundational data platforms, ML infrastructure, AI productization, governance, and Associates builder solutions that enable millions of associates, and data practitioners.
We are looking for a Data Scientist III who can roll up their sleeves and help build and ship the GenAI, agentic AI, and ML capabilities that power our platform capabilities, AI productization, and Associates builder solutions. You will partner with senior data scientists, ML engineers, and product teams to take ideas from prototype to production — building components of GenAI features and deploying ML models, and contributing to the safe, cost-effective AI solutions that empower millions of Walmart associates and data practitioners.
What you will do
- Translate and co-own business problems within the data science discipline into data-driven or mathematical solutions; identify appropriate methods and tools to be leveraged, and use concrete examples and use cases to demonstrate how each approach addresses the business need
- Build components of production GenAI features — including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, embedding generation, prompt templates, tool integrations, and evaluation harnesses — using frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalents
- Implement and maintain guardrails, evaluation metrics, and monitoring for LLM-based features (hallucination checks, prompt-injection mitigations, drift detection) under the guidance of senior data scientists
- Develop and ship real-time and batch ML/GenAI services, contributing to MLOps practices including CI/CD for models, automated retraining, and reproducible experimentation
- Rapidly prototype POCs and MVPs to validate AI/ML and GenAI hypotheses, and iterate based on user, stakeholder, and metrics-driven feedback
- Select analytical modeling techniques most suitable for structured, complex data and develop custom analytical models; conduct exploratory data analysis (basic statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, statistical inference); define and refine features based on model responses; design and run experiments and trend/cluster analyses to deliver actionable business insights
- Support model fit testing and statistical inference to evaluate model performance, and assess the impact of variables and features on accuracy and robustness
- Support efforts to ensure that analytical models and techniques can be deployed into production with the appropriate scalability, sustainability, and monitoring
- Write production-quality code using the team's recommended languages and frameworks to deliver solution and application features driven by business, technical, and data requirements; test code using the recommended approach
- Share learnings, experiment results, and post-mortems with the team through internal docs, demos, and brown-bag sessions
What you will bring
- 3+ years of professional experience building and shipping ML, AI, or GenAI systems in production
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, engineering, statistics, mathematics, economics, or a related quantitative field
- Hands-on experience with Generative AI fundamentals — prompt engineering, embeddings, vector databases, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
- Familiarity with at least one agentic AI / LLM orchestration framework (LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, or equivalent), including basic tool-use and multi-step workflows
- Awareness of LLM evaluation techniques, common failure modes (hallucination, prompt injection, drift), and basic mitigation strategies (guardrails, validation, human-in-the-loop)
- Demonstrated experience taking at least one ML or GenAI model from prototype to production (real-time inference, batch scoring, or both)
- Solid foundational knowledge of statistics, classical machine learning, and deep learning, with hands-on use of TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, or equivalent frameworks
- Strong programming proficiency in Python, with the ability to write clean, well-tested, and maintainable production code
- Working familiarity with model serving patterns, latency/throughput tradeoffs, and basic monitoring of ML systems in production
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git, containerization (Docker), and basic Kubernetes concepts
- Working knowledge of SQL and large-scale data processing tools such as Spark, Hive, BigQuery, or equivalents
- Ability to break down ambiguous problems into clear, testable hypotheses and experiments
- A collaborative, team-first mindset; comfortable giving and receiving feedback in code and design reviews
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to varied audiences
- A growth mindset, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to continuous learning in AI/ML and GenAI
