Position Summary:

The role will functionally own the Big Data (Spark, Dataproc), Analytics Data Services and Data Warehousing(Big Query) services.

About Team:

This position is responsible for leading the Data Services team in Bangalore, functionally responsible for all Big Data, Analytics and Data Warehousing services for Walmart.

The Group Director, Software Engineering – Data Services, is responsible for defining and scaling the technology platforms that power Walmart’s data lake, warehouse, and analytics services. This leader sets the long-term engineering vision and platform strategy for Big Data processing at Walmart.

This role operates at the intersection of Generative AI, platform engineering, distributed systems, data platforms, and operational excellence. The Group Director creates clarity on technical priorities, architectural tradeoffs, and execution sequencing across a complex ecosystem while ensuring platform reliability, scalability, and extensibility.
The role drives differentiated platform capability through GenAI native products, engineering excellence, data integration, measurement infrastructure, and closed-loop system design. The role drives significant impact through platform consolidation and unification.

What you'll do...

  • Build and operate the infrastructure services for exabyte scale data lake at Walmart on Google, Azure, and Private clouds.
  • Leverage and optimize data warehousing services – Big Query, Trino and other data warehousing services - to enable data engineering, data science and business analytics teams.
  • Oversees execution of large-scale projects: Manages complex projects and programs, develops solutions and contingency plans, and manages budgets and expenditures.
  • Hiring: Develops and implements strategies to attract, retain, and develop a highly skilled and engaged engineering teams, supporting mentorship, development, and succession planning.
  • Performance Monitoring: Establishes metrics and systems to track success of operational initiatives, including Availability (TTD, TTR), Cost(Infra cost and utilization) and Security(Authentication, Authorization and Auditing).
  • Strategic Planning: Develops multi-year plans to improve performance, profit and loss, and customer experience; supports LRP planning and budgeting.
  • Learning & Development: Drives initiatives to enhance learning, training effectiveness, and agent proficiency.
  • Cultivates an environment of integrity: Integrates company standards of integrity and ethics into all programs and practices, supports the Open Door Policy, and ensures compliance.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Builds relationships with key stakeholders, supports community outreach, and drives execution of business solutions.
  • Risk Management: Identifies and mitigates operational risks, ensuring business continuity and consistent quality.

Minimum Qualifications...

Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
Option 2: 10 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
5 years’ supervisory experience.
