What you'll do...
Job Description Summary:
As a Staff Engineer – Java Backend on the Marketplace Item Setup team, you will play a central role in building and evolving the backend systems that enable sellers and internal teams to list, manage, and publish millions of items across Walmart's global e-commerce platforms. You will own complex microservices and data pipelines end-to-end — from design and implementation to performance tuning and production reliability — while actively contributing to the team's technical direction.
You will be a technical go-to within the team, driving engineering quality, mentoring mid-level and senior engineers, and collaborating closely with Product, Data Engineering, and Frontend partners. This is a high-impact individual contributor role for an engineer who combines deep Java backend craft with the ability to lead technical execution across the team.
About Team:
The Marketplace Item Setup team is responsible for the foundational systems that manage the complete lifecycle of items and offers on Walmart's global e-commerce marketplace — serving global markets at massive scale. Our backend platforms process millions of catalog events every day — handling item ingestion, enrichment, attribute validation, and offer publishing across multiple geographies and product categories.
We are a fast-paced engineering team working at the forefront of Walmart's global growth strategy. We build and operate distributed, cloud-native backend systems using modern Java stacks, event streaming (Kafka), Azure cloud services (including Azure Cosmos DB), and Walmart's cloud-native infrastructure (WCNP). We are deeply invested in engineering excellence, platform reliability, and developer productivity.
What you'll do:
- Design and deliver high-quality backend services – Own end-to-end design and implementation of complex Java microservices powering item catalog ingestion, validation, transformation, and offer publishing workflows — ensuring high throughput, low latency, and reliability across global markets.
- Contribute to backend architecture and engineering standards – Actively participate in architectural discussions, propose and document technical solutions via ADRs, and help establish coding standards, reusable patterns, and service design best practices that elevate quality across the team.
- Champion reliability, observability, and testing – Drive adoption of SRE best practices (SLOs, error budgets, alerting), build robust automated test coverage (unit, integration, contract), and proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and systemic reliability gaps in production.
- Mentor and support engineering growth – Guide and coach junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pair programming sessions, and design discussions; foster a collaborative team culture grounded in technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate across functions to ship business outcomes – Partner effectively with Product Management, Data Engineering, Frontend Engineering, and global market stakeholders to deliver well-crafted, maintainable backend solutions that directly drive marketplace growth.
What you'll bring:
- Strong Java and distributed systems expertise – 10+ years of software engineering experience with deep proficiency in Java (8/11/17+), Spring Boot, microservices architecture, REST and gRPC APIs, and high-scale distributed systems design patterns.
- Event-driven and streaming systems experience – Hands-on experience building production systems with Apache Kafka or equivalent event streaming platforms; solid understanding of eventual consistency, idempotency, and at-least-once/exactly-once processing semantics.
- Cloud-native and Azure platform experience – Experience deploying and operating services on Kubernetes-based platforms (WCNP/Azure AKS or equivalent); working knowledge of Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Service Bus, and Azure Monitor; familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (Looper/Concord) and observability tooling (metrics, logging, distributed tracing).
- E-commerce or catalog platform domain knowledge – Experience in item/product catalog management, marketplace platforms, or supply chain data systems is strongly preferred; ability to ramp quickly on complex business domains and translate requirements into clean, maintainable technical solutions.
- Team-level technical leadership – Demonstrated ability to own services and features end-to-end, contribute meaningfully to technical design discussions, produce clear technical documentation, and mentor peers — with a track record of raising the engineering bar within a team.
