Job Description Summary:
As a Staff Engineer – Frontend on the Marketplace Item Setup team, you will play a central role in building and evolving the user-facing systems that enable sellers and internal teams to list, manage, and publish millions of items across Walmart's global e-commerce platforms. You will own complex frontend modules end-to-end — from architecture and implementation to performance optimization and production reliability — while actively contributing to the team's technical direction.
You will be a technical go-to within the team, driving engineering quality, mentoring mid-level and senior engineers, and collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Backend partners. This is a high-impact individual contributor role for an engineer who combines deep frontend craft with the ability to lead technical execution across the team.
About Team:
The Marketplace Item Setup team is responsible for the foundational systems and experiences that manage the complete lifecycle of items and offers on Walmart's global e-commerce marketplace — serving global markets at massive scale. Our frontend platforms power the seller-facing and internal tooling through which millions of items are created, enriched, validated, and published every day — across multiple geographies and product categories.
We are a fast-paced engineering team working at the forefront of Walmart's global growth strategy. We build and operate modern, cloud-native frontend applications using React, TypeScript, Node.js, and micro-frontend architectures, delivered via Walmart's cloud-native infrastructure (WCNP) and Azure CDN. We are deeply invested in engineering excellence, web performance, accessibility, and developer productivity.
What you'll do:
- Design and deliver high-quality frontend features – Own end-to-end design and implementation of complex React/TypeScript features and modules powering item setup, listing management, and offer publishing workflows — ensuring high performance, reliability, and accessibility across global markets.
- Contribute to frontend architecture and engineering standards – Actively participate in architectural discussions, propose and document technical solutions via ADRs, and help establish coding standards, reusable patterns, and shared component libraries that elevate quality across the team.
- Champion web performance, accessibility, and testing – Drive adoption of performance best practices (Core Web Vitals, bundle optimization, lazy loading), ensure WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, and build robust automated test coverage using Jest, React Testing Library, and Cypress.
- Mentor and support engineering growth – Guide and coach junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pair programming sessions, and design discussions; foster a collaborative team culture grounded in technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate across functions to ship business outcomes – Partner effectively with Product Management, UX/Design, Backend Engineering, and global market stakeholders to deliver well-crafted, maintainable frontend solutions that directly drive marketplace growth.
What you'll bring:
- Strong frontend engineering expertise – 10+ years of software engineering experience with deep proficiency in React, TypeScript, JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, and CSS3; solid understanding of component-based architecture, state management (Redux, Zustand, or equivalent), and modern build tooling (Webpack, Vite).
- BFF and API integration experience – Hands-on experience building and consuming Node.js-based Backend for Frontend (BFF) layers; proficiency integrating GraphQL and REST APIs to power data-intensive, workflow-driven UI applications.
- Web performance and accessibility skills – Demonstrated experience optimizing web applications for Core Web Vitals, reducing bundle sizes, implementing code splitting and lazy loading, and building to WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards across complex, multi-step enterprise UIs.
- Cloud-native delivery experience – Experience deploying frontend applications on Kubernetes-based platforms (WCNP or equivalent); working knowledge of Azure CDN and Akamai for static asset delivery, and CI/CD pipelines (Looper/Concord) for continuous, reliable frontend releases.
- Team-level technical leadership – Demonstrated ability to own modules and features end-to-end, contribute meaningfully to technical design discussions, produce clear technical documentation, and mentor peers — with a track record of raising the engineering bar within a team
