Role summary:The Staff Software Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, testing, and deployment of scalable, cloud-native software platforms. The role drives technical execution aligned with strategic roadmaps, enhancing system resilience, performance, and agility. In the eCommerce Search domain, the engineer leads the development of advanced search capabilities that improve user engagement and business outcomes. Responsibilities include mentoring engineers, conducting design reviews, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and leveraging AI/ML technologies to drive innovation. The position emphasizes technical excellence, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement while delivering high-quality solutions that support organizational objectives and platform growth.
About the team:
The Search Backend team develops scalable search solutions to enhance user experience across Walmart International markets. Utilizing advanced software development practices, including Agile methodologies, API integration, and containerization technologies like Kubernetes and Docker, the team builds robust backend systems. Members collaborate to deliver maintainable, high-quality code aligned with business and technical goals. Focused on continuous improvement, innovation, and effective problem-solving, the team drives performance and scalability to ensure seamless search functionality, supporting overall business growth and customer satisfaction.
What you'll do:
- Deliver platform capabilities including infrastructure, tooling, and machine learning frameworks aligned with roadmap milestones.
- Apply cloud-native architecture principles to ensure scalable, resilient, and agile systems.
- Lead full software development lifecycle activities including coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.
- Conduct system design reviews to validate feasibility and ensure quality and alignment with architectural standards.
- Build AI-driven applications and integrate machine learning components to enhance automation and intelligence.
- Mentor engineers, influence technical decisions, and promote engineering best practices.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate complex problems into actionable technical requirements.
- Drive continuous improvement through data-driven decision making and innovation.
What you'll bring:
- 10+ years of experience contributing high-quality code to production systems at scale, with deep expertise in building n-tier, highly scalable, fault-tolerant microservices using Java/Scala and RESTful architecture.
- Hands-on experience with machine learning platforms including scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and generative AI tools such as ChatGPT.
- Strong command of Java, Spring Boot, and distributed systems design.
- Experience refactoring and redesigning existing applications.
- A genuine passion for testability, with proficiency in Mockito and JUnit.
- Solid understanding of Kubernetes, Helm, multithreading, networking, and performance tuning.
- A disciplined approach to code review, testing, and documentation.
- Proven experience designing optimization algorithms for Search platforms.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
