Position Summary...

As a Distinguished Engineer on the Developer Productivity & CI/CD Platforms team, you will define and drive the long-term technical vision for Walmart’s enterprise Developer Productivity and CI/CD platforms. Your work will enable thousands of engineers to build, test, secure, release, and deploy software efficiently and reliably.

This is a hands-on individual-contributor leadership role requiring deep expertise in Java, distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, CI/CD technologies, Jenkins, Linux, and platform engineering. You will be a hands-on contributer and will shape platform strategy, lead critical architectural decisions, solve the organization’s most difficult engineering problems, and mentor Principal, Staff, and senior engineers.

You will partner with engineering, product, security, infrastructure, and application teams to create scalable, secure, and intuitive developer-platform capabilities that support diverse technology stacks and deployment environments.

About the Team

Walmart’s Global Tech Platforms organization builds the tools, platforms, and services used by thousands of engineers across the company. Developer Productivity and CI/CD Platform organization is part of the Tech Platforms organization. The team develops foundational capabilities for build automation, testing, security validation, release management, deployment orchestration, and developer workflows. Our mission is to improve engineering velocity and provide consistent, reliable software-delivery experiences at Walmart scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Define the technical vision, architecture, and roadmap for Walmart’s CI/CD ecosystem.
  • Lead the design of scalable, secure, and reliable CI/CD platforms, pipeline orchestration, build, release, and deployment services.
  • Solve complex distributed-system and production challenges while staying hands-on implementation, reviews, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Improve developer experience, platform standards, and AI-enabled workflows while partnering with leaders and mentoring senior engineers.

What You’ll Bring

  • Deep expertise in software architecture, distributed systems, cloud-native platforms, and enterprise-scale platform engineering.
  • Extensive experience building or operating CI/CD systems, developer platforms, or internal engineering tools.
  • Strong knowledge of build systems, pipeline orchestration, artifact management, automated testing, deployment strategies, and release automation.
  • Expert-level Java and JVM knowledge, including concurrency, multithreading, profiling, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Strong experience with Spring Boot, RESTful services, event-driven systems, Kafka, databases, and microservices.
  • Deep understanding of Linux, containers, Kubernetes, networking, storage, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience designing secure platforms with appropriate identity, access, secrets, policy, isolation, and audit controls.
  • Ability to reason across the full platform stack, from developer experience and APIs to runtime infrastructure and operations.
  • Proven ability to lead technical strategy and influence decisions across teams without relying on formal authority.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to explain complex trade-offs to technical and business leaders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 16+ years of relevant software engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or distributed-systems experience.
  • Experience defining architecture and technical strategy for enterprise platforms used across multiple teams or business units.
  • 5+ years of experience applying Agile principles and guiding execution across engineering teams.
  • Expert proficiency in Java, J2EE, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, REST services, concurrency, and JVM performance.
  • Deep experience with CI/CD platforms, Jenkins, build systems, artifact repositories, testing frameworks, and deployment automation.
  • Proven experience designing and operating scalable, highly available distributed systems.
  • Experience with Kafka or similar messaging technologies and relational or NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, and public cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Strong production expertise covering monitoring, logging, tracing, debugging, incident response, and root-cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-organizational architecture and mentor Principal, Staff, and senior engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience architecting an Internal Developer Platform used by thousands of engineers.
  • Experience modernizing large or fragmented CI/CD environments into standardized, self-service platforms.
  • Expertise in large-scale build system design - you have architected or led CI infrastructure serving tens of thousands of engineers, with hands-on knowledge of distributed build orchestration, multi-master topologies, agent/runner lifecycle management, and dynamic scaling under burst workloads
  • Experience operating Jenkins or comparable pipeline technologies at enterprise scale.
  • Experience designing multi-tenant control planes, workflow engines, schedulers, or distributed execution systems.
  • Knowledge of progressive delivery, policy-driven deployment, automated rollback, and release orchestration.
  • Experience with software-supply-chain security, artifact provenance, policy as code, and dependency governance.
  • Experience applying generative AI, LLMs, RAG, or agentic systems to developer-productivity or operational use cases.
  • Familiarity with React, JavaScript, Node.js, Python, or Go.
  • Experience with open-source technologies, performance engineering, cost optimization, or global enterprise platforms.
