What you'll do...

About Team:
The Health & Wellness Engineering team at Walmart is on a mission to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and convenient for millions of customers across the US. We build the technology that powers Walmart's pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, and wellness platforms spanning prescription management, clinical workflows, patient-facing digital experiences, and health program delivery. Our systems process millions of prescriptions annually and connect patients, pharmacists, prescribers, and payers in real time. The team operates at the intersection of technology and healthcare, building platforms that have a direct, measurable impact on patient outcomes and community health.

What you'll do:
As a Staff Engineer for Walmart Health & Wellness, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Define and drive the long-term technical strategy and architecture for the Health & Wellness engineering domain — making high-impact decisions on platform design, technology selection, and scalability that shape systems serving millions of patients
  • Lead cross-team architecture initiatives — author technical RFCs, own design reviews, and build consensus across multiple engineering teams, product stakeholders, and platform partners
  • Solve the organisation's hardest and most ambiguous engineering problems — decompose complex healthcare platform challenges into well-structured, scalable, and maintainable solutions at system scale
  • Establish engineering standards and best practices across the H&W engineering org — define patterns for API design, service communication, data consistency, observability, security, and resilience that teams adopt as the baseline
  • Partner with principal engineers, architects, and senior leadership to ensure the technical roadmap is aligned with business goals, regulatory requirements, and long-term platform health
  • Drive scalability and reliability improvements for systems handling high transaction volumes — prescription processing, real-time payer adjudication, and clinical data workflows — with a focus on fault tolerance, low latency, and zero patient impact
  • Lead efforts to modernise legacy systems and reduce platform-wide technical debt through pragmatic, incremental re-architecture strategies
  • Serve as a technical force multiplier — mentor senior and principal engineers, elevate technical discourse across the org, and contribute to hiring and levelling decisions for senior IC roles
  • Adhere to Company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity

What you'll bring:

  • BE/B Tech/ME/M Tech in Computer Science or related technical field
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with deep, hands-on expertise in Java backend development and large-scale distributed systems
  • Java — Expert Level — Mastery of Core Java (JVM internals, GC tuning, memory model, concurrency), Spring Boot ecosystem (Spring Security, WebFlux, Cloud), reactive and async programming patterns, and performance profiling (Java Flight Recorder, VisualVM, JProfiler)
  • System Design at Scale — Proven ability to design and evolve distributed, fault-tolerant, high-throughput systems (100K+ RPS); deep expertise in microservices, event-driven architecture (Kafka), CQRS, Saga pattern, distributed caching, API mesh, and multi-region deployment strategies
  • Architecture Patterns — Domain-Driven Design (DDD), hexagonal / clean architecture, strangler-fig for legacy modernisation, BFF (Backend for Frontend), and service mesh (Istio / Envoy); ability to evaluate and apply the right pattern for the problem
  • Platform & API Engineering — Designing platform-level capabilities, shared services, and internal SDKs consumed by multiple teams; OpenAPI / AsyncAPI governance, GraphQL federation, gRPC at scale
  • Data Architecture — Advanced expertise across relational (PostgreSQL / MySQL at scale — partitioning, replication, read replicas) and NoSQL (Cassandra, Redis, MongoDB, CosmosDB); data consistency patterns, eventual consistency trade-offs, and schema evolution strategies
  • Healthcare & Compliance — Understanding of HIPAA regulations, PHI / ePHI data governance, audit trail design, and healthcare interoperability standards (HL7 v2 / FHIR R4 / NCPDP / X12 EDI); experience designing systems that meet healthcare regulatory standards by architecture, not as an afterthought
  • Cloud & Infrastructure at Scale — Expert-level cloud architecture on GCP / Azure / AWS; Kubernetes (cluster design, multi-tenancy, resource governance), Terraform / IaC, service mesh, multi-region failover, and cost optimisation at platform scale
  • Observability & Reliability — Designing observability strategies (distributed tracing, structured logging, SLI/SLO/SLA definition, alerting); chaos engineering, capacity planning, and leading incident post-mortems with systemic fixes
  • Technical Leadership & Influence — Track record of driving org-wide technical decisions, authoring RFCs and ADRs, representing engineering in executive forums, and elevating the technical bar across senior IC and management layers
