Position Summary...

The Staff Software Engineer will provide technical leadership for Walmart's next-generation UGC platform, driving the design and evolution of cloud-native, event-driven distributed systems that power customer ratings, reviews, and seller feedback across Walmart's global eCommerce ecosystem. The role is responsible for defining technical strategy, leading architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and delivering highly scalable backend services built on Golang, Kafka, Kubernetes, Cosmos DB, and BigQuery. As a technical leader, the Staff Engineer will influence cross-functional teams, modernize the platform through engineering best practices and automation, and ensure high availability, low latency, and operational excellence. By enabling a reliable and scalable customer-generated content platform, this role directly strengthens customer trust, product discoverability, and conversion while accelerating Walmart's digital transformation and long-term business growth.

About the Team

The UGC – Ratings & Reviews team at Walmart Global Tech builds and operates the next-generation UGC 2.0platform that powers customer ratings, written reviews, image reviews, video reviews, and seller reviews across Walmart's web and mobile experiences.

UGC is a cloud-native platform built on an Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) using Golang microservices, Kafka, Cosmos DB, BigQuery, Kubernetes, and Azure/GCP. The platform enables real-time ingestion, moderation, storage, and delivery of customer-generated content at Walmart scale while providing high availability, low latency, and operational resilience.

Customer-generated content is a key driver of customer trust, product discoverability, and purchase conversion. As Walmart continues to modernize its eCommerce platform, UGC serves as the strategic foundation for delivering scalable, reliable, and innovative customer experiences.

What You'll Do:

Technical Leadership

  • Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of highly scalable distributed systems powering Walmart's UGC platform.
  • Drive the technical vision for cloud-native, event-driven services using Golang, Kafka, Kubernetes, Cosmos DB, and BigQuery.
  • Design systems for high throughput, low latency, resiliency, and cost efficiency.
  • Lead architectural reviews and establish engineering standards across multiple teams.

Engineering Excellence

  • Own complex initiatives from technical design through production deployment and long-term operational support.
  • Improve system reliability, scalability, observability, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for critical production incidents and implement long-term engineering improvements.
  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, Infrastructure as Code, and secure software development.

Cross-functional Leadership

  • Partner with Product, Program, Business, Data Science, and Engineering teams across the U.S. and India to define technical strategy and execution plans.
  • Translate business priorities into scalable technical solutions.
  • Drive alignment across multiple engineering teams and influence technical decisions without direct authority.

Platform Modernization

  • Lead the evolution of Walmart's UGC platform and Event-Driven Architecture.
  • Drive migration from legacy systems to modern cloud-native services.
  • Improve platform performance, reliability, developer productivity, and operational automation.
  • Evaluate and introduce emerging technologies that improve scalability and engineering velocity.

Mentorship & Technical Influence

  • Mentor senior engineers and engineers across the organization.
  • Raise engineering quality through design reviews, code reviews, and technical coaching.
  • Establish engineering best practices and contribute to long-term technology strategy.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

What You'll Bring:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems.
  • Strong expertise in Golang or Java, with deep knowledge of backend system design.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications on Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, containerized microservices, and service orchestration.
  • Strong understanding of Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) and distributed messaging systems such as Kafka.
  • Experience with large-scale data platforms including Cosmos DB, BigQuery, or similar distributed databases.
  • Strong knowledge of API design, distributed systems, scalability patterns, and fault tolerance.
  • Expertise in observability using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Splunk, or OpenObserve.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps, automation, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Excellent debugging, performance tuning, and production incident management skills.
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building large-scale eCommerce or marketplace platforms.
  • Experience with customer-generated content, moderation systems, or recommendation platforms.
  • Knowledge of distributed data processing and streaming architectures.
  • Experience with AI-assisted developer tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar productivity tools.
  • Contributions to engineering strategy, architecture governance, or platform engineering initiatives.
