Position Summary...

What you'll do...

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, building, and scaling highly available, enterprise-grade platforms that power Walmart's technology ecosystem. You will provide technical leadership across multiple teams, influence architecture decisions, drive engineering best practices, and deliver innovative solutions that support business growth and operational excellence. This role requires a strong combination of hands-on software development expertise, architectural leadership, and the ability to mentor engineers while working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. What You'll Do
  • Drive the technical vision and influence product strategy, architecture, and roadmap development.
  • Design, develop, and implement large-scale, distributed, and highly scalable applications and platforms.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives spanning multiple systems, teams, and business domains.
  • Architect and develop high-performance, high-throughput systems capable of supporting large transaction volumes.
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Engineering, and Business teams to define and deliver innovative technology solutions.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and lead resolution efforts for complex production and business-critical issues.
  • Establish software engineering best practices, coding standards, and architectural guidelines.
  • Ensure software solutions meet quality, security, compliance, and performance requirements.
  • Oversee testing strategies, maintenance activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent by providing technical guidance, coaching, and code reviews.
  • Champion Agile development methodologies and contribute to continuous delivery and DevOps practices.
  • Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies to improve platform scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field and 12+ years of software development experience; OR equivalent experience.
  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, preferably developing retail or large-scale enterprise applications using Java technologies.
  • 8+ years of experience designing and architecting highly scalable, distributed, and high-performing applications.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with two or more open-source or cloud technologies such as Kafka, Spark, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Solr, BigQuery, AlloyDB, Spanner, or similar platforms.
  • 4+ years of experience developing and architecting high-transaction, high-throughput systems.
  • 3+ years of experience building RESTful APIs and microservices-based architectures.
  • Experience with cloud-native application development and modern software engineering practices.
  • Strong knowledge of distributed systems, scalability, reliability, and performance optimization.
  • Experience leading large, complex technical projects from concept through production deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience with Scala.
  • 2+ years of experience working in Agile development environments across geographically distributed teams.
  • 2+ years of experience with Hadoop, Hive, GCP, Spark Streaming, or related big data technologies.
  • Experience with AI/ML platforms, data-intensive applications, and event-driven architectures.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical direction across organizations.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
