Job Ad DescriptionWe are looking for an experienced and highly technical Staff Software Engineer to join our engineering team and provide technical leadership for scalable, high-impact technology solutions. In this role, you will architect, design, and build distributed systems that power critical business capabilities, while influencing technical direction across teams and partnering closely with product, architecture, data science, and operations stakeholders.
As a senior technical leader, you will solve complex engineering problems at scale, define architecture and design standards, mentor engineers, and raise the bar for engineering excellence. You will drive reliable delivery across high-throughput platforms, improve system performance and resilience, and help teams adopt modern engineering practices, automation, observability, and operational rigor.
Job Summary
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the architecture, design, and delivery of scalable backend systems and data-intensive platforms that power ad delivery, monetization, and measurement at enterprise scale. You will work on high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems, provide technical direction across multiple initiatives, and partner across engineering, data science, product, and business teams to deliver impactful AdTech solutions

About the team
Our Advertising Technology team is building an end to end advertising platform that is key to Walmart’s overall growth strategy. We use cutting edge machine learning, data mining and optimization algorithms to ingest, model and analyse Walmart’s proprietary online and in-store data, encompassing 95% of American households. Importantly, we build smart data systems that deliver relevant retail ads and experiences that connect our customers with the brands and products they love.
What You’ll Do
Lead the design and development of scalable, reliable, and high-performing software systems that meet the needs of customers, advertisers, and the business.
Drive architecture and technical strategy for complex engineering initiatives, making sound design decisions across services, data pipelines, APIs, and platform components.
Collaborate with product managers, architects, data scientists, and engineering leaders to translate business goals into scalable technical solutions.
Mentor and guide engineers through design reviews, code reviews, best practices, and technical problem-solving to raise engineering quality across the team.
Improve system performance, availability, observability, security, and operational excellence for mission-critical platforms.
Identify opportunities to simplify architecture, automate manual processes, reduce technical debt, and improve developer productivity.
Troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement long-term corrective actions for resilient platform operations.
Champion secure software engineering practices and ensure systems are designed to protect customer, advertiser, and business data.
What You’ll bring
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
Minimum 8+ years of software engineering experience, including strong object-oriented programming expertise in Java or similar backend technologies.
5+ years of experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems, backend services, or data-intensive platforms.
Strong experience with system design, data structures, algorithms, concurrency, performance optimization, and distributed computing fundamentals.
Hands-on experience with big data or streaming technologies such as Spark, Kafka, Cassandra, Hadoop, Hive, Presto, or Airflow.
Additional Qualifications:
Proven ability to provide technical leadership, influence architecture decisions, and drive alignment across multiple teams or stakeholders.
Experience building scalable and fault-tolerant platforms with strong focus on reliability, observability, security, and operational excellence.
Exposure to cloud infrastructure and containerized environments such as Azure, GCP, AWS, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or similar platforms.
Experience in AdTech, retail media, advertising platforms, search, recommendation systems, information retrieval, statistics, or machine learning is a plus.
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to engineering, product, and leadership audiences.
A continuous drive to explore, improve, automate, and optimize systems, tools, and engineering practices.
