About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead transformational engineering initiatives across Generative AI, Chaos Engineering, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE). This role drives modernization of engineering practices, resilience frameworks, automation capabilities, and AI‑augmented engineering solutions supporting mission‑critical platforms across Wells Fargo Technology.
This position is suited for a highly influential technical leader with deep expertise in distributed systems, reliability engineering, and AI—capable of shaping enterprise strategy, mentoring engineering talent, and delivering resilient, scalable, and innovative solutions. Candidates with prior Distinguished Engineer–level impact or industry recognition will receive strong preference.
In this role, you will:
- Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups
- Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking
- Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions
- Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions
- Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization
- Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
- Hands‑on expertise in distributed systems, microservices, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architectures.
- Deep experience with Generative AI, including LLMs (GPT, Claude, LLaMA), Transformers, Hugging Face, LangChain, or equivalent frameworks.
- Strong Python and ML engineering experience (PyTorch/TensorFlow).
- Demonstrated experience with Chaos Engineering tools and resilience testing methodologies.
- SRE experience: SLIs/SLOs, observability, incident response, and automation.
- Expertise with monitoring and telemetry platforms (AppDynamics, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, etc.).
Desired Qualifications:
- B.Tech with 14+ years of experience in development and Testing of end to end projects.
Job Expectations:
Generative AI & Advanced Development
- Architect enterprise-scale LLM‑based and GenAI solutions, including retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG) and agent-based architectures.
- Develop prompt engineering patterns, fine‑tuning pipelines, evaluation frameworks, and model optimization strategies.
- Drive responsible AI practices, ensuring transparency, fairness, and security across AI lifecycle.
Chaos Engineering & Resilience
- Lead creation of chaos engineering programs to validate system reliability across distributed platforms.
- Build automated fault injection frameworks using tools such as Gremlin, Chaos Mesh, or custom framework development and scale at enterprise level
- Embed resilience testing into CI/CD workflows and influence reliability standards across engineering ecosystems.
Site Reliability Engineering
- Define and establish enterprise SLIs/SLOs/SLAs for critical systems.
- Implement observability frameworks and telemetry pipelines for proactive issue detection.
- Automate operational tasks to reduce toil, improve MTTR, and strengthen reliability posture.
Software Engineering & Platform Architecture
- Lead design and engineering of scalable, fault‑tolerant distributed systems.
- Establish testing frameworks for functional, performance, and resilience automation.
- Promote engineering best practices in code quality, CI/CD, performance engineering, and observability.
Leadership & Enterprise Impact
- Serve as a thought leader for GenAI, chaos engineering, and reliability engineering domains.
- Mentor senior engineers, coach teams, and uplift engineering maturity.
- Influence technology roadmaps, contribute to enterprise engineering strategy, and partner with cross-functional leaders.
- Represent Wells Fargo in technical forums, innovation initiatives, and patent contributions.
- Experience operating at a Principal Engineer–equivalent level, demonstrating:
- Multi-domain technical depth
- Enterprise‑wide architecture influence
- High-impact engineering leadership
- Strong external presence (patents, publications, industry forums)
- Experience designing GenAI-driven testing, performance engineering, or autonomous engineering systems.
- Strong understanding of responsible AI, model governance, and risk controls.
- Experience with resiliency patterns, high availability architecture, and large-scale fault-tolerant systems.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and drive cross-functional initiatives.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and technical storytelling skills.
