About the Team

Since 2005, Workday has been redefining how organisations manage their people and finances — and we are just getting started. With a global footprint and customers across every industry, we are driven by a shared passion for building technology that makes work life better for everyone. Innovation, collaboration, and excellence are not just values here — they are how we operate every day.

Join the Gateways team, responsible for the API Gateways at Workday, spanning across Dublin, Ireland, USA and India. Our services are the critical entry point for extensive integrations, ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient communication. We handle high volumes of traffic, performing essential API gateway functions while building and maintaining a robust, scalable system using innovative technologies. Beyond keeping the day-to-day operations running smoothly, we act as a key enabler for innovative projects across Workday and its broader ecosystem, continuously assessing how to apply emerging technologies to improve our services.

About the Role

As a Software Engineer on the Gateways team, you will play an important role in building and maintaining the API gateway services that power Workday's integration layer. You will work with technologies such as Scala, Akka HTTP, and Akka Streams to develop highly scalable and resilient distributed systems that handle significant traffic volumes.

Your work will directly impact the reliability and performance of services that every Workday integration and API call depends on. You will contribute clean, well-documented, and testable code, participate in code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions, and collaborate with multi-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain API Gateway services using Scala, Akka HTTP, and Akka Streams

  • Implement robust routing, validation, authentication, and transformation logic

  • Contribute to the development of highly scalable and resilient distributed systems

  • Write clean, well-documented, and testable code

  • Participate in code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions

  • Diagnose and resolve production issues, including on-call support

  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions

  • Contribute to improving the efficiency and reliability of services

About You

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in software engineering, developing and delivering scalable software applications or services

  • 2 years of experience with Scala or Java.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience

Other Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of algorithmic thinking, with the ability to design, implement, and analyse efficient algorithms for data processing and automated reasoning tasks to solve complex problems

  • Proficient in software development practices, including experience with programming languages (Scala or Java), and a strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle — from design and programming through to testing and documentation

  • Experience with code testing methodologies such as unit testing, integration testing, and regression testing, with the ability to identify and fix issues before deployment and improve overall software quality

  • Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Design principles, including encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, and abstraction, and the ability to create flexible and reusable software components

  • Familiarity with source control management tools and practices, with the ability to manage versions and branches, resolve merge conflicts, and contribute to maintaining the integrity of a shared codebase

  • A collaborative team member who communicates effectively, contributes to a positive team environment, and works cooperatively with others to solve problems and deliver results

  • Experience with distributed systems, API development, or high-throughput services is a plus

  • Familiarity with Akka HTTP, Akka Streams, or similar reactive/streaming frameworks is a plus

Our Approach to Flexible Work

With Flex Work, we’re combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

At Workday, we are committed to providing an accessible and inclusive hiring experience where all candidates can fully demonstrate their skills. If you require assistance or an accommodation at any point, please email
