You will step into a pivotal role as a Lead Engineer, setting the standard for engineering excellence and quality practices within one of our product teams at Xero. Your work involves contributing to the technical direction of the product group and undertaking hands-on software application development on our suite of products, including new ones.
Your impact will be significant and highly visible, as you'll be accountable for delivering multi-year, multi-team product or platform goals. You will tackle open-ended problems, simplify technical complexities , and execute large projects to a high standard, balancing speed, quality, and architectural alignment. Furthermore, you will coach and mentor engineers , helping them grow their technical capability , which is a key driver for problem-motivated engineers.
The team & how they connect
The Reporting team is a close-knit group, mainly based in Wellington, New Zealand. The team works in a hybrid environment, actively focusing on platform uplift, which involves migrating legacy systems to modern cloud technology like Kubernetes. They are structured into product and platform pods, fostering a collaborative culture where self-starters thrive. The team works together to create and deliver beautiful software to customers, faster.
The team is currently working on
Tech Stack (Current/Target): C# (.NET 4.8 & .NET 8), SQL Server, DynamoDB, DevOps (AWS, TeamCity, Octopus Deploy), and an increasing focus on React/XUIC.
Platform Uplift: Migrating legacy .NET 4.8 systems to modern .NET 8 running on Kubernetes.
Compliance Features: Delivering high-impact, critical Australian Compliance Features within Compliance Reporting.
Future Focus: General movement towards Fullstack development, with an increasing frontend bias, to support the next generation of compliance reporting products.
Where and how you can work
This role is for a Lead engineer based in New Zealand, with the team primarily operating out of the Wellington hub. With specific Xero 'boost days' involving food and barista made coffee and a flexible hybrid way of working (in office and work from home). The team is collaborative and has a close-knit team environment.

You will bring expert-level technical knowledge in your specialisation, with the ability to adopt new languages and tools quickly.
You can demonstrate proficiency in designing secure, scalable, and maintainable systems, particularly with experience in distributed architectures.
You will have a track record of simplifying complex designs into scalable, flexible components.
You can show proven capability in coaching and mentoring engineers, and fostering growth and best practices within a team.
You are comfortable influencing the roadmaps of other teams to achieve business-impacting goals.
You will drive overall testing strategy for significant systems with high reliability or quality requirements.
