Lead Engineer

The role / impact

As a Lead Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in evolving our data landscape by bridging the gap between our core ecosystem and go-to-market systems. You will lead the design and implementation of integration solutions that empower our sales, marketing, and customer experience teams with high-quality data products.

Your work will directly influence Xero’s next growth phase as you oversee the decommissioning of legacy stacks in favour of a modern Snowflake platform. Beyond technical delivery, you will act as a strategic partner, building networks across the business to understand emerging needs and bringing in new work to support our future focus on AI and Agentic solutions.

The team / how they connect

You will join the Kung Fu Bees, a high-trust and nurturing team of eight engineers who primarily operate as a single unit across two collaborative work streams. Based in Wellington with a presence in Australia, the team manages a wide portfolio including finance, payroll, and go-to-market integrations, working closely with stakeholders to apply a commercial lens to our data sets.

The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on

  • Leading the modernisation of data by replatforming legacy C# batch processing systems into Snowflake Data Products.

  • Driving the Chargebee migration, a key business enabler moving from bespoke billing to a scalable SaaS solution.

  • Utilising a modern technical stack featuring Snowflake, SQL, and dbt to build and master critical business data points.

  • Exploring the adoption of AI and Agentic solutions to better expose data for our global go-to-market teams.

Where and how you can work

This role is open to candidates in Melbourne or Sydney, working within a hybrid model that balances office connection with remote flexibility. You will need to be comfortable with a slight shift in hours to maintain crossover with the Wellington-based team, with daily ceremonies typically beginning at 9:00 am AEST and most meetings concluding by 1:00 pm AEST

Here are some of the things we are looking for

  • You bring a wealth of experience in backend solutioning and API design, with the ability to turn complex problem statements into robust architecture.

  • A strong background in traditional integration or data engineering is essential, particularly with SQL, dbt, or C#.

  • You have a natural gift for building professional networks and can confidently translate technical concepts for diverse business stakeholders.

  • Your toolkit includes a deep understanding of data transformation and modern platforms like Snowflake.

  • You possess a proclivity for delivery mechanics and enjoy coaching others to ensure work flows through the team effectively.

  • A curiosity for emerging technologies like AI and a desire to build "agentic" solutions will help you thrive in our long-term strategy.
