Project Title: NYC Communities for Health (NYCC4H)

Project Description:

NYC Communities for Health (NYCC4H) is a prevention-based and SAMHSA-funded program housed at NYU Silver School of Social Work. Our mission is to prevent STIs, underage drinking, and substance use through community prevention education, harm reduction resources, and referrals to social and clinical services to ensure safer cities and healthier futures for Bronx youth ages 13-24. By addressing historical health injustices for marginalized groups (e.g., Black and Latinx communities), we aim to minimize health disparities and empower community members to enact change in their daily lives. Related to these goals, NYCC4H also provides overdose prevention and response training with fentanyl test strips (FTS) and naloxone (NARCAN®) to address substance use disparities in communities in need of such services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Research Assistant will specialize primarily in Community Outreach and Engagement:

  1. Outreach: Conducting outreach with community organizations in NYC to create and carry out a community engagement plan.
  2. Data Collection: Facilitating surveys to gather community insights.
  3. Service Delivery: Conduct engaging and informative training sessions on opioid overdose prevention and response using fentanyl test strips (FTS) and naloxone (NARCAN®). Training will be in English/Spanish, conducted in person at events throughout NYC and remotely via Zoom.
  4. Resource Identification: Identifying resources to help participants overcome care barriers and implementing referrals.
  5. Navigation Support: Assisting participants with accessing and staying in care for substance use disorders and STI/HIV treatment, including offering accompaniment when needed.
  6. Supply Preparation: Manage supplies for outreach and community events, as well as assist with inventory management.
