Job Summary:
What you need to know about the roleIn this role, you will be leading the transformation of products and services powering in-store merchant run the business experience towards a unified omni experience. This means not only driving customer experience cohesion, but also converging the underlying data and service layer towards the ones powering online experience.
You'll be working with both technical stakeholders - Engineering Managers, Senior Engineers, skip-level leaders - and other functions (Product Managers, Customer Support, Sales) to evolve and adjust the technical direction in order to meet the business objectives.

- Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow
- Actions result in the achievement of customer, operational, program or service objectives
- Proactively improves existing structures & processes
- Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems
- Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions
- Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor
- Trusted to represent PayPal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Your day-to-day
As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll be interacting with multiple teams owning the Point of Sale offering. You will be aligning the technical direction with the business problem, questioning the requirements, and challenging the status quo by ensuring that technical decisions align with business direction - both the ones currently being made, but also revising the historical ones as needed.
Your day-to-day will primarily involve:
Guiding the principles and considerations behind designing and developing scalable backend systems to support and enable engineering teams you work with.
Identifying opportunities for strengthening technical cohesion while reducing intentional and incidental coupling between systems
Proactively identifying architectural and execution challenges and ensuring leadership visibility and follow-up on them
Mentoring other engineers while growing own competence
What you need to succeed
Proven background in large-scale, high-performance system design and optimization.
Effective communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience leading informally through expert influence and building partnerships.
Advanced proficiency in Java, with strong expertise in core concepts, design patterns, and optimization techniques.
Extensive hands-on experience with Java frameworks like Spring (Spring Boot, Spring MVC) and Hibernate, building scalable and maintainable solutions.
Strong ability to collaborate with and influence cross-functional teams, contributing to technical leadership through code reviews, design discussions, and mentoring junior engineers.
Deep knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), utilizing them to deliver cost-effective and scalable solutions.
Solid understanding of both relational and NoSQL databases, with hands-on experience in ORM tools like Hibernate to ensure efficient data handling and performance tuning.

Familiarity with microservices architecture and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
